About

Engineer, writer, and builder based in Michigan.

Hey, I'm Zach.

By day I work at a web design and marketing agency. On the side I build software projects, mostly out of curiosity. I don't use social media, so this site is where I write and think in public.

I'm in my early thirties, live in Michigan with my wife and two kids, and work remotely. I'm drawn to a lot of things: classic literature, medieval history, personal finance, board games, genealogy, software development, home servers, right to repair, and the idea of being more self-sufficient. This site is a place to work through all of it.

Background

I graduated from Northern Michigan University with a degree in Business Administration. After graduation, I scaled a chain of stores over 7 years, figuring out operations, hiring, and margins mostly by doing. Eventually I successfully sold it as a turnkey operation. It was the best education I could have gotten, and I wouldn't trade it.

After the exit I moved into the web and marketing world, which has been a always been a natural fit due to my background in IT and development. I've always cared about quality and efficiency. I look for ways to improve processes and outcomes, whether it's through better design, more efficient workflows, or cleaner code. Building software on the side scratches the same itch.
